Dinosaur Hunters

Two films for Channel 4, which put the 19th century church and scientific institutions on a warpath, following the discovery of the first dinosaur bones at Lyme Regis in Dorset. A discovery which, contrary to religious belief, seemed to suggest that monstrous creatures walked the earth millions of years before man. On a personal level, the films also chart the fierce and destructive rivalry between two men, Gideon Mantell and Richard Owen - both bent on being the first to be recognised as having discovered the dinosaurs. This cue underscores the point in the drama where, despite Owen's objections, Mantell is finally honoured with the Royal Medal for Geology for his tireless work on the Iguanadon, at the expense of his health and marriage.
